Why are these things made of wool?

It is a complicated and often contentious topic, but one that can be summed up by a simple question: why do these things exist?
The answer, it seems, is that they do.
But it’s not necessarily because people who are making them love wool, or are looking for a warm, fluffy hat to wear around the home.
